how to recognize it

identification

Eel-like body, long and rounded, dark purplish brown with small scattered yellow dots. The dots become sparser toward the tail, which helps identify the species. The teeth on the upper jaw form two rows of similar size. Since it hides in reef crevices, the most useful identification clue is the dark background with yellow dots, which thin out toward the tail.

rules for the abbott's moray eel

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

It has no spines or venom, but the moray bites if handled badly. Remove the hook with long pliers and release it without putting your hand into its burrows.
