how to recognize it

identification

Elongated body with prominent reddish bands across the back. Like other lizardfish of the family Synodontidae, it has a wide mouth with pointed teeth and a lizard-like look. It lives in shallow waters and reefs, resting on hard surfaces, which helps tell it apart from Saurida brasiliensis, which lives deeper, usually between 50 and 194 m.

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.
Conservation: Not on the Brazilian national list (Ministerial Ordinance GM/MMA No. 1.667/2026).

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

No danger to anglers. Since its mouth is full of pointed teeth, hold it firmly when removing the hook.

in the kitchen

Reportedly good to eat, but little used.
