The sand grunt belongs to the family Haemulidae, the grunts. It reaches 30 cm, and the common size is 25 cm. It lives in the eastern Pacific, from Mexico to Peru, on sandy bottoms near the coast. It also enters estuaries and lives in brackish water. It has a fusiform body, a shape common to grunts. Commercial fishing catches it on a small scale, and it has little interest for sport fishing.

how to recognize it

identification

Fusiform body, a shape common to grunts. It lives on sandy bottoms near the coast and enters estuaries, which helps separate it from reef grunts. It can be confused with Rhencus macracanthus, which also enters estuaries, has a brown or gray back and sometimes shows faint dark bars. It can also be confused with Genyatremus pacifici, which lives on hard bottoms and has transverse stripes on a gray body.
