overview

who is the yellowstripe grunt

The striped grunt belongs to the family Haemulidae, the grunts. It reaches 37 cm, and its common size is 26 cm. It lives in the eastern Pacific, from Mexico to Ecuador, on the continental shelf in coastal waters. The body is oblong and compressed, with pale or dark longitudinal stripes that follow the scale rows, and five or six dark vertical bars. Commercial fishing takes it on a small scale, and it is of little importance to sport fishing.

Essential profile. Identification, where it occurs and rules, with data from FishBase and the cited regulations. Season, time of day, technique and bait are added once we have a good source for the yellowstripe grunt; in the meantime, see the similar species.

how to recognize it

identification

Oblong, compressed and not very deep body, with a small, terminal mouth. The body is silvery grey, with pale or dark longitudinal stripes and five or six dark vertical bars. The inner part of the pectoral fin has a large black spot, almost invisible with the fins folded. It can be confused with Haemulon sexfasciatum, which also has vertical bars but on a yellowish body and with a dark spot behind the eye. Haemulopsis elongatus, of the same genus, is dull grey with a paler belly.
