who is the patagonian redfish

The Patagonian redfish belongs to the family Sebastidae and reaches 40.8 cm. It lives near the bottom, in subtropical waters, in the southeast Pacific and southwest Atlantic, off Chile, Argentina and the Falklands. It has five dark blotches on the back and four or five spots on the sides of the body. It is viviparous, that is, the females carry the young inside the body. It is caught commercially, and its spines can injure anyone handling it.

how to recognize it

identification

Bottom-dwelling fish with five dark blotches on the back and four or five spots on the sides of the body. The dorsal fin has firm spines, typical of the family. These well-marked blotches help set it apart from the deepwater redfish (Helicolenus lengerichi), which lives on the same coast of Chile and Argentina and has irregular dark marks on the dorsal fin.
