who is the bluenose warehou
Fish of the family Centrolophidae, with a fusiform, dark body, reaching 1.4 m and 63 kg. The common size is about 60 cm. It lives near the bottom, between 40 and 1,500 m, usually at 260 to 490 m, and is most common near rocky areas, along canyon edges and steep drop-offs. By day it stays near the bottom, and at night it rises in the water column to feed. It eats pelagic tunicates, squid, crustaceans and fish, from small lanternfish to large fish. Juveniles stay at the surface, sometimes near floating debris. In the region, it is caught mainly by the commercial fleet.
Essential profile. Identification, where it occurs and rules, with data from FishBase and the cited regulations. Season, time of day, technique and bait are added once we have a good source for the bluenose warehou; in the meantime, see the similar species.
fun facts
- It feeds mainly on the tunicate Pyrosoma atlantica, which stays near the bottom by day and spreads through the water column at night.
identification
Fusiform body of normal shape, dark all over, from very dark gray to nearly black. To tell it apart from Seriolella caerulea, which lives in the same waters, look at size and color: this species is all dark and reaches 1.4 m, while the other reaches 65 cm. Depth also helps: this species stays deeper, usually between 260 and 490 m, and juveniles rise close to the surface.

Each card shows the day's index (0 to 100) and, below it, a strip with the index for each hour, from 0h to 23h. from poor to excellent.
Essential profile: the index uses a general fish model (weather, sun, moon and tide), without a season or time of day specific to this species.
where found
In Latin America, it occurs off the coast of Argentina, in the southwest Atlantic, in deep waters. Outside the continent, it appears in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
Habitat: Irregular bottoms and the edges of canyons and slopes, most common between 100 and 300 m, with juveniles at the surface.
rules for the bluenose warehou
Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.
We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.
catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.
No danger to the angler. As it comes from great depth, it suffers barotrauma if raised quickly, so if returned, release it as deep as possible.
in the kitchen
It goes to market fresh and frozen, and part is exported to Japan for sashimi. It is also eaten steamed, fried, grilled or baked.
how much it weighs without taking it out of the water
Length-weight relationship W = a·Lb (a = 0.00891, b = 3.1; FishBase (relação peso-comprimento bayesiana, estimativa da própria espécie)). It's an average: a fat or lean fish can vary by 10% to 20%.
