how to recognize it

identification

Fish of the family Emmelichthyidae, the rovers (peixes-rubi), with an elongated body, living near sand and mud bottoms between 90 and 300 m. Size is the best clue for telling it apart from the red rover (Emmelichthys ruber), which reaches 30 cm, while this one reaches 65 cm. As both species live in similar depth ranges, check the length of the fish before deciding.

what the law says

rules for the atlantic rubyfish

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

No danger to the angler. It lives on bottoms of 90 to 300 m, and rapid ascent causes barotrauma, so release calls for care.

in the kitchen

Sold fresh or frozen, and also made into fishmeal and fish oil.
