It reaches 84 cm and up to 5.1 kg. It occurs in a circumpolar belt, generally within the Antarctic Convergence, and also in the Falkland Islands region, with records from Argentina. Stomach samples contained remains of pelagic crustaceans such as euphausiids, polychaete worms and fish. It has commercial use but is of no interest to sport fishing.

The mouth is large and the lips are thin. In the same region, Macrourus carinatus is paler, from brown to straw-colored, and lives shallower, from 500 to 800 m.

what the law says

rules for the whitson's grenadier

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

The dorsal fin spines are not dangerous. Ascending from very deep water causes barotrauma, so release it carefully.
