overview

who is the mottled flounder

The spotted flounder belongs to the family Bothidae (lefteye flounders) and reaches 25 cm, with a common size of 18 cm. It lives on soft, shallow bottoms, generally down to 45 m, from the Bahamas to the Antilles and northern South America. Like other flounders, it lies on the bottom with both eyes on the same side of the body. It is taken as bycatch from shrimp trawls and has little commercial use.

what the law says

rules for the mottled flounder

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

It is not dangerous to anglers. Since it usually comes from trawl nets, release it carefully so as not to injure its flat body.
