overview

who is the pike icefish

It lives on the bottom between 50 and 250 m, in the Patagonia region, the Falklands and the Strait of Magellan, and rarely around South Georgia. It mainly eats fish and krill. It reaches 35 cm and 270 g and has few scales, which occur only along the lateral line. It appears in commercial fishing and almost never on the line of sport anglers.

how to recognize it

identification

Elongated, brown body with irregular blotches, almost scaleless: scales occur only along the lateral line. The rear edge of the tail is notched inward. Since it lives on the bottom of cold southern waters, from 50 to 250 m, the catch location already helps tell it apart from other elongated fish.

distribution

where found

open on the large map

Habitat: Cold-water bottoms, 50 to 250 m.

what the law says

rules for the pike icefish

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

No danger to anglers. It is a vulnerable species and lives at 50 to 250 m, so release it quickly and as deep as possible because of barotrauma.
