overview

who is the shining pencilfish

The shining pencilfish belongs to the family Lebiasinidae, the pencilfishes, with a slender, elongated body and small fins. Reaches 3.5 centimeters standard length. It lives in tropical fresh waters, between 24 and 28 °C, from the bottom to midwater. Known records come from the Capim River basin in Pará. The species belongs to the genus Nannostomus, the pencilfishes, which have a dark stripe along the body. Because it is tiny, it is of no interest to sport fishing.

Essential profile. Identification, where it occurs and rules, with data from FishBase and the cited regulations. Season, time of day, technique and bait are added once we have a good source for the shining pencilfish; in the meantime, see the similar species.

how to recognize it

identification

A slender, elongated pencilfish of the family Lebiasinidae, with a dark stripe along the body and shiny flanks, like the others of the genus Nannostomus. Reaches 3.5 centimeters, a little less than the elegant pencilfish (3.6 cm) and more than the striped-and-spotted pencilfish (2.4 cm). Its size and the Capim River basin, where it is known, are the safest ways to tell the three species apart.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

It is not dangerous. It is very small and fragile: handle it only if necessary, with wet hands, and return it to the water promptly.
