uruguay river — nuevo berlín
Fishing village on the lower Uruguay River, among islands and wetlands (esteros). Home of the boga, next to Esteros de Farrapos National Park.
Nuevo Berlín sits on the Uruguayan bank of the Uruguay River, where the river opens into islands, channels and marshes. The village's river station houses the office of Esteros de Farrapos and Islas del Río Uruguay National Park. Boga (piapara) is the village's fish, and the village runs a catch-and-release boga fishing event declared of tourist interest. Dorado and surubim appear in the channels and at island points; armado too, but it is banned and must be released. Fishing is from a boat, with dough or natural bait for boga and casting for dorado.
best season
Autumn and winter, March to August, combine boga and dorado outside the closed season. Dorado is banned from September 1 to December 31.
Local rules: Part of the islands and marshes lie within Esteros de Farrapos and Islas del Río Uruguay National Park, where fishing incompatible with conservation is banned. The CARU closed season for dorado runs from Sep 1 to Dec 31. Pacu, manguruyú, river salmon (piracanjuba), tiger surubim (cachara) and armado catfish are banned from fishing in all forms, including sport fishing (CARU Res. 8/98, as amended by Res. 59/12, and DINARA Res. 333/2022, art. 29): release any specimen.
