Heros severus
Acará of soft, acidic waters of the upper Orinoco and upper Negro River, whose parents guard the eggs and carry the larvae in their mouths. It is caught for trade and sold for the aquarium.
Also called: acará-peba, acará-piranga, acará-preto, vieja, banded cichlid
Acará-peba is a cichlid of the family Cichlidae, reaching 20 cm. It occurs in the upper Orinoco, in Colombia and Venezuela, and in the upper Negro River, in Brazil. It lives between the bottom and midwater, in soft, acidic water (pH between 5 and 6.5), and is also reported from brackish water. It spawns on stones or roots, with up to 200 eggs, which both parents guard. The larvae are carried in the mouth, and parental care can last up to six weeks. In fishing it has commercial use, and the species is also sold for the aquarium.
Essential profile. Identification, where it occurs and rules, with data from FishBase and the cited regulations. Season, time of day, technique and bait are added once we have a good source for the banded cichlid.
Cichlid with a body compressed sideways, dark bands along the body and a spiny dorsal fin. The three common names, acará-peba, acará-piranga and acará-preto, all refer to the same species. To identify it, look at the bands, the size (up to 20 cm) and the place: soft, acidic waters of the upper Orinoco and upper Negro River.
