overview

who is the panama porkfish

The striped sargo belongs to the family Haemulidae, the same family as the sargos, grunts and burros. It reaches 31 cm, and its common size is 20 cm. It lives in the eastern Pacific, from Mexico to northern Peru, over hard bottoms in shallow coastal waters. Because it lives on hard bottoms, it is found near rocks and reefs. It has little sport interest and is commercially fished on a small scale.

how to recognize it

identification

Compressed, deep body, with a golden-yellow back. On the flanks there are six bright blue stripes, each edged in dark blue. A dark band runs from the nape across the eye, and another from the base of the dorsal fin to the base of the pectoral fin. The pectoral fin is no longer than the head. It can be confused with Anisotremus davidsonii, another sargo of the Mexican Pacific, which lives farther north, from California to Baja California and the Gulf of California, and lacks the blue stripes.
