abacaxis river — borba and nova olinda do norte
Forest river between the Madeira and Tapajós, with community sport fishing being regularized. Only with an operator tied to the communities.
The Abacaxis flows down from southern Amazonas, crosses the Acari National Park and forms the western boundary of the Alto Maués Ecological Station and the Pau-Rosa National Forest before joining the Madeira via the Paraná Urariá. Riverside communities and the Maraguá people live along the river, and the federal prosecutor's office (MPF) sees community sport fishing as a way to generate income and curb invasions. It is the Borba river that appears in Ipaam sport fishing license requests. The target is peacock bass, cast in lakes, creek mouths and timber snags, with aruanã, cachorra and bicuda along the banks. The region has a history of conflicts: fish only with the operation recognized by the communities.
best season
Dry season, August to November. Amazonas law provides a closed season for peacock bass, not yet regulated; catch and release remains allowed.
Local rules: The area has Incra extractive settlements, a federal conservation unit and the Maraguá-Pagy Indigenous Land, under demarcation. In August 2026, the MPF recommended that Ipaam issue fishing certificates to the companies named by the local associations, until demarcation and enforcement of IN Funai 3/2015: fish only with an operator tied to that agreement. The Acari National Park, in the upper course, is fully protected. In Amazonas, açu, pinima and vazzoleri peacock bass are catch and release only, and live bait is banned for peacock bass (Lei AM 6.647/2023, with Lei 7.208/2024). Check local rules.
