sucunduri river — borba
A river of rapids and falls in southern Amazonas, forming the Canumã. Pinima peacock bass of nearly 80 cm recorded as a record in 2024.
The Sucunduri rises in the Sucunduri State Park, in Apuí, flows north across the Acari National Park, and on joining the Acari forms the Canumã. It has rapids stretches, such as Monte Cristo, and the Sucunduri Falls. It is a river of pinima peacock bass: in August 2024, a nearly 80 cm specimen caught on the Borba stretch was recorded as a record by BGFA. Aruanã, cachorra and catfish such as pirarara complete the fishing. It is a remote, expensive destination, with flight and boat logistics, and the river rises and runs through fully protected units.
best season
Dry season, August to November, with rapids and rocky stretches exposed. Amazonas law provides a closed season for peacock bass, not yet regulated.
Local rules: The Sucunduri rises in the Sucunduri State Park and crosses the Acari National Park, both fully protected: inside them, any fishing depends on the management plan and the authorization of the manager (ICMBio or Sema-AM), under Lei 9.985/2000. In Amazonas, pinima, açu and vazzoleri peacock bass are catch and release only, and live bait is banned for peacock bass (Lei AM 6.647/2023, with Lei 7.208/2024). Check local rules.

tip
In a river with current, the pinima peacock bass sits in the eddy behind rocks and logs: mid-water lures retrieved close to the structure do better than the surface in strong sun.
