Before reaching the city of Aquidauana and the Pantanal, the Aquidauana River crosses the Maracaju hills, where the districts of Piraputanga, Camisão and Palmeiras lie. Mato Grosso do Sul's official fishing guide cites fishing lodges and inns in those districts, in the river's hill region, and lists the fish of the Aquidauana: pacu, dorado, surubim, cachara, jaú and piraputanga, which gives one of the districts its name. On the hill stretch, fishing is by casting, with fruit and dough baits for piraputanga, pacu and dorado; in the pools, surubim, cachara and jaú take live bait on the bottom.
best season
Season from March to October, outside the MS piracema (Nov 5 to Feb 28). With the river lower and clearer, from August to October, piraputanga are easier to see and to fish.
Local rules: In MS, amateur fishing is catch and release: you may consume on site and take only 1 native fish within size limits, plus 5 piranhas; peacock bass and other exotics have no limit (Decreto 15.166/2019). Imasul state license, in addition to the federal one. Dorado: capture banned until Mar 31, 2027, catch and release only (Lei 5.321/2019, wording from Lei 6.390/2025). Surubim is a Vulnerable species: capture only under the recovery plan, with a minimum of 85 cm in the upper Paraguay (PI MPA/MMA 15/2024); in MS, between 85 and 125 cm. Piraputanga: minimum 30 cm in MS. Piracema from Nov 5 to Feb 28 (Decreto 15.166/2019, art. 11): in Pantanal rivers there is no fishing or catch and release in that period. Check local rules.
