miranda river — passo do lontra
Pantanal along the Estrada Parque, with inns on the Miranda's banks. Surubim, pacu and piraputanga everywhere.
Passo do Lontra is on the Miranda River, along the Estrada Parque Pantanal. It's mid-river fishing, with cutbanks, snags and bays. Surubim and cachara at night and early in the morning in the pools, pacu on shaded banks, piraputanga in clearer water, dorado at bends with current. Jurupoca and piranha round it out. Bottom fishing with live bait and casting for dorado. It combines well with wildlife watching: caiman, giant river otter (ariranha), jabiru and, with luck, jaguar.
best season
Season from March to October, with a peak from August to October, when the river is low.
Local rules: In MS, catching and transporting dorado are banned (Law 5.321/2019, extended, with a planned validity until March 2027): catch and release only. Spawning closure (piracema) in state rivers from Nov 5 to the end of February. Check local rules.
