End of the Transpantaneira, near the confluence of the Cuiabá, Piquiri and São Lourenço rivers. Big-river fishing, with a jaguar on the bank.

Porto Jofre is the end point of the Transpantaneira, on the bank of the Cuiabá River. From there you reach the meeting with the Piquiri and São Lourenço, a region famous for jaguar watching. Fishing is on a wide, deep river: surubim, cachara and jaú in the pools and cutbanks, pacu on the banks, dorado in the current. Barbado show up often. Bottom fishing with live bait, dough for pacu and casting for dorado. The season is short and tied to the low-water period.

Local rules: MT has Zero Transport (Laws 12.197/2023 and 12.434/2024): until 2029, 12 native species, including surubim, cachara, dorado, jaú and piraputanga, may not be captured to take home, transported or sold. In practice, catch and release. Spawning closure (piracema) in MT from Oct 1 to Jan 31. The laws are being challenged at the STF (Supreme Federal Court): check local rules. The Encontro das Águas State Park is in the region.

getting there: From Cuiabá, about 100 km to Poconé and another 145 km on the Transpantaneira (MT-060), a dirt road with more than a hundred bridges. Airstrips at the inns.
facilities: Fishing hotels and inns in Porto Jofre and along the Transpantaneira, live-aboard boats, fishing guides and boatmen.
