guaporé river — pimenteiras do oeste
Border river with Bolivia, with huge várzeas and bays. Surubim and pirarara in the river, peacock bass in the bays.
The Guaporé winds slowly between floodable fields and forests, with side bays, sandbanks and cutbanks. It is an environment similar to the Pantanal, but with Amazonian fauna. Caparari and surubim in the pools and cutbanks, pirarara and jaú on the bottom, pirapitinga and tambaqui near fruit on the bank. In the bays, peacock bass and piranha. Pimenteiras do Oeste is the base, with inns and live-aboard boats. Bottom fishing with natural bait and casting in the bays.
best season
Low water, June to October. The river drops and concentrates fish in pools and bays.
Local rules: Border river: fish only in Brazilian waters, with a Brazilian license. The Guaporé Biological Reserve and the Corumbiara State Park are closed to fishing. Spawning closure (piracema) in the Amazon basin (in Rondônia, usually from mid-November to mid-March). Check local rules.
