In Costa Marques, the Guaporé runs wide and winding, marking the border with Bolivia, with bays, lagoons and floodable forest on both banks. In the dry season, leather catfish gather in the deep bends: caparari, surubim, pirarara and jaú, fished on the bottom with natural bait. Pirapitinga and piranha along the edges and in the bays. The town keeps the Real Forte Príncipe da Beira, an 18th-century fortress, and the region is quiet fishing with little traffic.

In the Guaporé-Mamoré sub-basin, the closed season from Nov 15 to Mar 15 applies to all species, except those listed in Portaria Ibama 48/2007. The Guaporé Biological Reserve, downriver, is strictly protected: visiting and fishing are prohibited. Tambaqui: capture prohibited from Oct 25, 2026 (threatened species). Check local rules.

getting there: By road, on the BR-429, which branches off the BR-364 at Presidente Médici. Porto Velho and Ji-Paraná have the most used airports.
