The Nhamundá flows from the north and empties into the left bank of the Amazonas, forming the border between the two states, with the town of Nhamundá (AM) on one side and the municipality of Faro (PA) on the other. It is a calm, blackwater river with a sandy bed: in high water, from January to July, navigation is easy; from August, beaches and sandbars appear, and the lakes and pools are cut off. Line fishing targets peacock bass in the lakes and along the banks, and riverside residents also catch matrinxã and aracu with line. At the end of September, the town holds the Peacock Bass Fishing Festival, with a contest for the biggest fish. Sport fishing infrastructure is simple, based on local boatmen.

Dry season, September to mid-November, with beaches and isolated lakes; the Peacock Bass Fishing Festival is at the end of September. On the Pará bank, the fishing agreement bans fishing during the closed season, Nov 15 to Mar 15.

Local rules: On the Pará bank (Faro), the fishing agreement of the Nhamundá communities applies (Portaria Semas-PA 1.616/2025, for 3 years since May 30, 2025): fishing banned during the closed season, Nov 15 to Mar 15; in spawning holes, subsistence only with a simple cane pole, hand line or rod; and several nets are prohibited. In Amazonas, açu, pinima and vazzoleri peacock bass are catch and release only, and live bait is banned for peacock bass (Lei AM 6.647/2023, with Lei 7.208/2024). Tambaqui: catch banned from Oct 25, 2026, as a threatened species (Portarias GM/MMA 1.666 and 1.667/2026). Check local rules.

getting there: Nhamundá is about 375 km from Manaus in a straight line and about 577 km by river. Access is by boat; Parintins, to the south, is the nearest hub town.
facilities: Simple hotels and inns in town, boatmen and local fishers. Little infrastructure dedicated to sport fishing.

In the dry season, enter slowly through the shallow channels that connect the lakes to the river, and fish the mouths early in the morning with a topwater lure; when the sun rises, switch to mid-water along the shaded banks.
