overview

who is the southern bluefin tuna

The southern bluefin tuna is a tuna of the family Scombridae, very large, reaching 245 cm and up to 260 kg. It lives in open sea, in cold and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans, mainly between 30° and 50° south latitude, and makes long migrations. It feeds on a wide variety of fish, crustaceans and cephalopods. It has commercial fishing, is farmed in aquaculture, and is highly prized in Japan for sashimi. If fishing continues at the current rate, the population could fall below 500 adults in 100 years.

rules for the southern bluefin tuna

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.
Conservation: Not on the Brazilian national list (Ministerial Ordinance GM/MMA No. 1.667/2026).

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

Harmless to handle. Being a large, heavy fish, handle it with support, without forcing the head or the tail. As the species is threatened worldwide, release the specimens you won't keep.

in the kitchen

Much of the catch goes to canning, and tuna of sashimi quality is highly prized, especially in Japan.
