Paulo de Faria is on the São Paulo shore of the Rio Grande, in the upper stretch of the Água Vermelha dam lake, upstream of Riolândia and Cardoso. Fishing here has a professional and subsistence tradition, but it also draws sport anglers, from the bank and by boat. Croaker, peacock bass and trahira are the most cited targets, and in the stretches with more current, piauçu and pacu appear. Next to the river is the Paulo de Faria Ecological Station, a remnant of forest in northern São Paulo protected since 1981.

March to October, outside the spawning closure (piracema). From Nov 1 to Feb 28, only non-native species are allowed in the lake, such as croaker and peacock bass.

Local rules: Spawning closure (piracema) in the Paraná basin, Nov 1 to Feb 28 (IN Ibama 25/2009): in the lake, only non-native species, up to 10 kg plus 1 fish; piauçu is excluded from that allowance. Outside the spawning closure, basin minimum sizes apply (IN Ibama 26/2009): pacu 45 cm, piauçu 40 cm, trahira 25 cm. The Paulo de Faria Ecological Station (state decree 17.724/1981), on the Rio Grande shore, is a full-protection unit: no fishing inside it. Check local rules.

getting there: About 540 km from São Paulo, via SP-322. Regional airport in São José do Rio Preto.
facilities: Bank and boat fishing from the shore; hotels and restaurants in town, which is a Municipality of Tourist Interest. More fishing infrastructure in Cardoso, on the same lake.
