paraíba river estuary — cabedelo
Mangroves and channels between Cabedelo and Lucena. Tarpon rolling at the surface and snook in the mangrove roots.
The Paraíba River reaches the sea between Cabedelo and Lucena, after passing Praia do Jacaré and mangrove islands. The estuary is known for tarpon that roll at the surface on the morning flood tide, with snook in the mangrove roots, pescada-amarela in the deep channels and crevalle jack near the bar. Fishing is from a voadeira (small aluminum boat), with artificial lures and live shrimp. The Cabedelo port and ship traffic require attention in the main channel.
best season
September to March, with less rain and clearer water in the estuary.
Local rules: Tarpon is a threatened species (Vulnerable): catch and release only, ideally without lifting the fish out of the water; harvest, retention and transport are prohibited. Port navigation channel: don't anchor or fish on the ships' route. Cabedelo has the Parque Estadual Marinho de Areia Vermelha, a full-protection area. Check local rules.
