paraná river — guaíra

Where Sete Quedas once stood, now the head of Itaipu Lake. Peacock bass and croaker, with the Ilha Grande archipelago upriver.

Guaíra sits on the Paraná shore of the Paraná River, where the Sete Quedas waterfalls once stood, drowned by Itaipu Lake in 1982. Upriver begins the archipelago of Ilha Grande National Park; downriver, the lake widens up to Foz do Iguaçu. Fishing mixes river and reservoir: peacock bass and croaker on the rocks, arms and islands; dorado and surubim in the current and channels; jaú, pacu and piapara on bottom fishing and at chum. The town borders Mato Grosso do Sul and Paraguay.
