The Uruguai River at the far west of Santa Catarina, on the border with Rio Grande do Sul. Dorado, piava, jundiá and pati in running water.
Itapiranga is at the far west of Santa Catarina, on the bank of the Uruguai River, which here separates the state from Rio Grande do Sul; across the river are Caiçara and Derrubadas, a municipality in the Turvo State Park and the Yucumã Falls. In this stretch the river runs free, with no dam, with rocky sections and fast current, the dorado's habitat. Fishing is from a boat or from the bank: dorado with mid-water and natural baits in the current, piava and jundiá on the bottom, and pati in the deepest pools. During the spawning closure (piracema), the stretch of river starting at the mouth of the Macaco Branco river, in Itapiranga, is closed to all fishing.

From late summer to autumn, and in September. From Oct 1 to Jan 31 the Uruguai basin spawning closure (piracema) applies, and the stretch between the Macaco Branco river and the Lajeado São Francisco is closed to all fishing.
Local rules: Spawning closure (piracema) in the Uruguai basin, Oct 1 to Jan 31 (IN Ibama 193/2008): handline or rod only, one gear per angler, up to 5 kg, and unpowered boats only; no fishing on the Uruguai River between the mouth of the Macaco Branco river, in Itapiranga, and the Lajeado São Francisco, in Alto Uruguai (RS), a stretch that includes the front of Turvo State Park, nor within 1,500 m of waterfalls and rapids, within 500 m of tributary mouths, or in marginal lagoons; competitions suspended. Dorado is listed as Vulnerable on the Santa Catarina list of threatened species (Consema Resolution 002/2011): good practice is to release it. Turvo State Park, on the Rio Grande do Sul shore, is a full-protection unit of Sema-RS: do not fish or land in the park area. Check local rules.

During the spawning closure (piracema), check on the map that your spot is outside the closed stretch between the mouth of the Macaco Branco river and the Lajeado São Francisco. Outside it, look for dorado at the drop-offs of the current just below the rocks.
