how to recognize it

identification

Rockfish with a fusiform, olive-toned body, as the common name suggests. It lives on shallow reefs and near kelp, sometimes well off the bottom, which sets it apart from deep-water rockfishes. Compare it with the kelp rockfish, which also lives in shallow kelp, but stays close to the bottom.
