identification
Rocky-shore surfperch with a compact body, which forms schools near rocks, algae and piers. The common name refers to its thick lips, like rubber. Like the other surfperches of the family, it is viviparous. On the same coast, the calico surfperch (Amphistichus koelzi) lives on sandy beaches in the surf zone, not on rocky shores, which separates the two by habitat. The pile perch (Phanerodon vacca) also lives on rocky shores, but it is silvery, with dark spots.
