overview

who is the cowcod

Rockfish of the family Sebastidae, genus Sebastes, living on the deep bottom of the North Pacific. It grows to 100 cm and up to 13 kg. Juveniles are pelagic and stay over fine sand and clay, while adults move to rocky areas, 90 to 300 m deep. The species is viviparous and has planktonic larvae. As it lives on the deep bottom, it is out of reach of shore fishing. It is considered a sport fish and also appears in commercial fishing.

Essential profile. Identification, where it occurs and rules, with data from FishBase and the cited regulations. Season, time of day, technique and bait are added once we have a good source for the cowcod.

how to recognize it

identification

Bottom rockfish, recognizable as a sebastid by the spines on the head and fins, traits common to the family. The habitat helps identify it: juveniles live in open sea, over fine sand and clay, and adults stay in rocky areas between 90 and 300 m deep.

distribution

where found

open on the large map

what the law says

rules for the cowcod

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

It is not venomous, but it has strong spines. As it lives on the bottom, it suffers barotrauma if reeled up quickly; if you release it, do so carefully.
