Where the Rio das Garças meets the upper Araguaia, on the border with Goiás. A city with an airport, seasonal beaches and catfish and cachorra fishing.

Barra do Garças sits at the confluence of the Rio das Garças and the Araguaia, facing Aragarças (GO) and Pontal do Araguaia, and is the hub city of the upper Araguaia. The Porto do Baé, on the waterfront, has a boat ramp and is the departure point for boats. In the dry season the river drops and opens beaches, such as Bosque Beach, and the city receives tens of thousands of visitors in the July season; fishing concentrates in the holes and rocky stretches: pirarara, jaú and barbado on the bottom with natural bait, cachorra and bicuda in the current, pescada and piranha along the edges. Downstream, the Araguaia runs toward Aruanã.

Dry season, June to September, with beaches in July. Spawning closure Nov 1 to Feb 28 on the Araguaia, a border river, and Oct 1 to Jan 31 on the Rio das Garças.

Local rules: Border river: on the Araguaia, the Goiás bank follows Goiás rules, and the Araguaia spawning closure runs Nov 1 to Feb 28 (INI MPA/MMA 12/2011). In Mato Grosso, the Zero Transport rule applies through Dec 31, 2028 (Lei MT 9.096/2009, as amended by Lei 12.434/2024): catch and release, with on-site consumption of up to 2 kg or 1 specimen, and taking fish home is banned; pirarara, jaú, surubim and peacock bass are among the 12 species that may not even be eaten. On the Rio das Garças, the state spawning closure runs Oct 1, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027 (Resolução Cepesca 1/2026), with no fishing at all. Araguaia matrinchã (Brycon gouldingi), a threatened species: catch banned. Check local rules.

At the rocky stretches near town, cachorra and bicuda hit mid-water lures in the current. At night, fish bait on the bottom of the holes for pirarara and jaú.
