Where the Taquari meets the Coxim, at the entrance to the Pantanal. Pacu, piraputanga and dorado, catch and release.

Coxim was born at the meeting of the Taquari and Coxim rivers, in the upper Pantanal, and for decades was one of Mato Grosso do Sul's fishing hubs. The Coxim comes down with clearer water, with rapids where piraputanga and dorado hunt; the Taquari arrives muddy and loaded with sand. Pacu on fruit and dough baits, piavuçu and curimbatá on chum, and surubim, cachara and jaú in the pools, on bottom bait. For years the Taquari has suffered from silting, which shifts channels and fishing spots downriver.

Outside the MS piracema (Nov 5 to Feb 28). March to May, with the river full of leather catfish, and August to October, in the dry season, are the best periods.

Local rules: In Mato Grosso do Sul, amateur fishing is catch and release, with consumption on site and transport of 1 native fish within size limits, plus 5 piranhas (Decreto MS 15.166/2019). Dorado: capture banned until Mar 31, 2027, catch and release only. Surubim has a minimum size of 85 cm in the upper Paraguay. State piracema from Nov 5 to Feb 28. Imasul license required. Check local rules.

getting there: Via BR-163, about 250 km north of Campo Grande, which has the nearest airport with regular flights.

Piraputanga climb the rapids after fallen fruit: a small artificial lure or fly imitating fruit, along the forest edge.
