parnaíba delta and barra grande
The only delta on open sea in the Americas, with camurupim, snook and weakfish in mangroves, channels and beaches.
The Parnaíba Delta has dozens of islands, igarapés and mangroves between Piauí and Maranhão. Fishing is estuarine: snook at mangrove roots and channel mouths, camurupim rolling in the channels, weakfish on the bottom. On the beaches and bars, crevalle jack and sororoca. Barra Grande, to the east, has shallow beaches and boat fishing on bars and shoals. Casting with plugs and jigs, and natural bait on the tide.
best season
Dry season, August to December, leaves clearer water. Wind is strong at this time: fish the protected channels.
Local rules: Parnaíba Delta APA and Parnaíba Delta Marine Extractive Reserve: fishing is regulated and communities have priority. Camurupim: prefer catch and release. Check local rules. Camurupim is a threatened species (Vulnerable): catch and release only, preferably without lifting the fish out of the water; capture, retention and transport are prohibited.
