Urban fishing at the confluence of the Poti and Parnaíba, in the capital of Piauí. Croaker (pescada-do-piauí) and trahira.

Teresina was born between two rivers, the Poti and the Parnaíba, which meet in the Encontro dos Rios Environmental Park, in the city's north zone. In the dry season the rivers drop, sandbanks appear, and fishing is from the bank and by canoe: croaker (pescada-do-piauí), the fish that carries the state's name, trahira along vegetated banks, and piranha in the eddies. It is simple late-afternoon fishing, for locals and passing visitors. The Parnaíba marks the border with Maranhão.

Dry season, June to October, with low rivers. Spawning closure (piracema) in the Parnaíba basin from Nov 15.

Local rules: Spawning closure (piracema) in the Parnaíba basin from Nov 15: the text of IN MMA 40/2005 says it ends on Mar 16 and the Ibama table says Feb 16, so confirm the dates. During the period, recreational anglers may only fish with line, rod or spinning reel, up to 5 kg plus 1 fish, and fishing within 1,500 m of dams and waterfalls is prohibited. The Parnaíba is a border: the Maranhão shore follows Maranhão's rules. Confirm local rules with Semarh.

Croaker (pescada-do-piauí) feed late in the afternoon in the pools and along the edges of the sandbanks: shrimp or a piece of fish on the bottom, with a light sinker.
