fernando de noronha — offshore fishing

Blue water a few minutes from the harbor, with wahoo, barracuda and tuna. Fishing only outside the Marine National Park.

Noronha is an oceanic archipelago about 350 km off the coast of Rio Grande do Norte, with deep blue water right past the island's shelf. Much of the main island and the sea around it lies in the Parque Nacional Marinho de Fernando de Noronha, where fishing is not allowed. Recreational fishing happens outside it, in the Environmental Protection Area, with boats leaving Porto de Santo Antônio for trolling: wahoo, barracuda, mahi-mahi and yellowfin tuna, plus bottom fish on the permitted shoals. Fishing tourism is growing and still being regulated.

Offshore fishing runs all year, depending on the sea. During the north swell season, usually December to March, trips out through the Mar de Dentro get harder.

Local rules: Parque Nacional Marinho de Fernando de Noronha: full protection, fishing prohibited across the whole park. Outside it, in the APA, fish only with a local operator and confirm areas and rules with ICMBio before you go out. Blue marlin and threatened sharks: harvest prohibited, release. Check local rules.
