juparanã lagoon — linhares
The largest of the lower Rio Doce lagoons, with more than 60 km² of freshwater in Linhares. Peacock bass, trahira and snook, with a catch-and-release tournament in August.
The Juparanã is a natural lagoon of about 63 km² on the lower Rio Doce plain, between Linhares, Sooretama and Rio Bananal, connected to the Rio Doce by the Rio Pequeno. It is the main water source for all three towns and has more than 40 freshwater beaches, most on private land. After the Fundão dam collapse in 2015, a temporary barrier was built on the Rio Pequeno to stop tailings from entering, which cut the water exchange with the river. Sport fishing revolves around peacock bass, introduced, trahira and snook: they are the species of the August tournament, held on the city's anniversary, run catch and release on the Juparanã and Nova lagoons.
best season
The city's fishing tournaments take place in August. Snook is under closed season from May 1 to Jun 30 in ES; during the spawning closure (piracema, Nov 1 to Feb 28), check whether the lagoon is open.
Local rules: Snook: closed season May 1 to Jun 30 on the coast and in the inland waters of Espírito Santo, and tournaments targeting snook banned May 1 to Aug 31 (IN Ibama 10/2009). Spawning closure (piracema) in the Southeast basins, Nov 1 to Feb 28 (IN Ibama 195/2008): only non-native species, and fishing is banned in marginal lagoons; since the Juparanã is connected to the Rio Doce, confirm with Iema or Ibama whether it is open during that period. Check local rules.
