The mouth of the São Mateus River, the Cricaré, with mangroves and fishing beaches at the northern tip of Espírito Santo. Snook, weakfish, croaker and flounder.
Conceição da Barra was born at the mouth of the São Mateus River, the former Cricaré, where river, mangrove and sea meet. At Praia do Farol, between the river mouth and the 1914 lighthouse, fishing is the main attraction, and at Praia da Guaxindiba, at the mouth of the Itaúnas River, about 3 km from the town center, snook and pescadinha predominate. The estuary's mangrove, about 11 km², is protected by the Conceição da Barra state APA. A trawl survey by researchers from Ufes and UFPR recorded 44 species in the estuary, with carapebas and cangoás among the most abundant, plus flecha snook, croaker, flounder, yellow weakfish, white weakfish and cutlassfish. All year, except during the snook closed season in Espírito Santo, May 1 to Jun 30.
Local rules: Snook: closed season May 1 to Jun 30 on the coast and in the inland waters of Espírito Santo, and snook tournaments banned May 1 to Aug 31 (IN Ibama 10/2009). Minimum sizes in the Southeast (IN MMA 53/2005): flecha snook 50 cm, peva snook 30 cm, croaker 25 cm, flounder 35 cm. The mangrove at the river mouth lies within the Conceição da Barra APA, a sustainable-use unit run by Iema. Check local rules.
