Blackwater tributary of the Rio Negro, on the border between Amazonas and Roraima. Big açu peacock bass in rarely fished lakes.
The Jufari flows down from Roraima and enters the Rio Negro near the community of Caicubi. It is a narrow blackwater river with many várzea lakes, igapós and sandbanks in low water. Fishing focuses on açu peacock bass, with a real chance at large fish. Borboleta and popoca complete the list, and aruanã and payara appear along the banks. Casting from the bank and from the lake, with zaras, propeller lures and jigs. Sport fishing on the river is regulated and monitored by public agencies: go only with a licensed operator and respect the riverside communities.
best season
Low water, October to February. Confirm the level with the operator: the river responds fast to rain.
Local rules: In Roraima, Law 1.540/2021 bans recreational and commercial fishing for peacock bass in the Jufari, Água Boa do Univini, Itapará and Xeruini. Sport fishing (catch and release) by companies licensed by Femarh and riverside subsistence remain allowed. The 5-year term may have been extended, and the MPF monitors fishing on the river. Check local rules.

- Flight from Manaus to Barcelos and launch on the Rio Negro to the mouth of the Jufari, or direct seaplane. Live-aboard boats leaving Manaus also operate in the region.
