xeruini river — caracaraí
Blackwater tributary of the lower Branco River, inside a state RDS. Açu peacock bass catch and release only, with a licensed operator.
The Xeruini empties into the lower Branco River, south of Caracaraí, and since 2022 is inside the Xeruini Sustainable Development Reserve, a state unit. It is a blackwater river, with lakes, igapós and beaches in the dry season, and one of the rivers that Roraima's law reserved for sport fishing and riverside subsistence. The target is açu peacock bass, with borboleta and popoca lures, and aruanã, cachorra and bicuda along the banks. In March 2026, MPF, MPRR, Femarh, companies and the communities of Terra Preta, Canauini, Lago Grande and Cachoeirinha signed a conduct adjustment agreement (TAC) that organizes the activity until the reserve's management plan is approved, with mandatory catch and release and local labor.

Dry season, October to February. In Roraima, from Mar 1 to Jun 30 all rivers are under closed season (Portaria Ibama 48/2007).
Local rules: Roraima Law 1.540/2021 (amended by Law 2.112/2025): in the Xeruini and tributaries, commercial and recreational peacock bass fishing are banned; sport fishing only by a company licensed by Femarh, with at most 2 barbless hooks per bait, and riverside subsistence. Femarh Ordinance 1/2011 bans treble hooks and sets 20 as the maximum number of sport fishers on the river. In the Xeruini RDS, the March 2026 TAC bans keeping or selling peacock bass. Closed season in Roraima Mar 1 to Jun 30 on all rivers (Portaria Ibama 48/2007). Check local rules.

- Only with a licensed operator: usually a flight from Manaus or Boa Vista and a boat up the Branco River to the Xeruini. From Boa Vista, BR-174 leads to Caracaraí, from where you go down the river.

In the dry season, fish the lake mouths and beach points with a noisy topwater lure early in the morning; when the sun rises, switch to mid-water near the logs.
