marié river — upper rio negro

The river of giant peacock bass, in indigenous land. Community-based sport fishing, catch and release only, with limited spots.

The Marié is a blackwater tributary of the upper Rio Negro, inside the Médio Rio Negro I and II indigenous lands. It is famous as one of the last strongholds of very large açu peacock bass, and for the way it is managed: a sport fishing project run by the indigenous communities, with Funai support and Ibama oversight, in which every fish is measured, recorded and released. The number of anglers per week is small and the season is short. Besides the açu, there are borboleta, aruanã, cachorra and bicuda. There is no independent access: only through the authorized operator.

Dry season on the upper Rio Negro, usually November to March. The season is set each year by the operator and the communities.

Local rules: Indigenous land: fishing is allowed only within the project, with a visitation plan approved by Funai and the consent of the communities. Unauthorized operators have already been reported by indigenous associations and targeted in an MPF action; do not buy packages from companies that cannot prove the agreement. In Amazonas, açu peacock bass is catch and release only (Lei AM 6.647/2023, with Lei 7.208/2024). Check local rules.
