Blackwater tributary of the Rio Negro, isolated and rarely fished. Big açu peacock bass in lakes and along the banks.

The Unini runs between the Rio Unini Extractive Reserve and the Jaú National Park. It is a narrow river with dark water and many bends, with side lakes, rocky beds and sandbanks in low water. Fishing pressure is low and the average size of the açu is high. Fishing is casting from the bank and from the mouths of lakes, with surface lures and jigs. Borboleta and popoca give volume. The operation is limited and controlled: few boats, rotation of areas and catch and release. Anyone going goes with an operator that has an agreement with the communities.

Low water, September to January. October and November usually have lower water and more concentrated fish.

Local rules: Rio Unini Extractive Reserve and Jaú National Park. Under the reserve's zoning (Joint IN Ibama/Ipaam 2/2004), sport fishing is restricted to the upper Unini, with agreement from the communities and catch and release. In the park, only with ICMBio authorization. The matter has already been the subject of an MPF action: check local rules.

getting there: Flight from Manaus to Barcelos, then launch or seaplane to the fishing area. Some operations run on live-aboard boats on the Rio Negro.
facilities: Live-aboard boat or floating camp from an authorized operator, with voadeiras and riverside guides. There is no town or shop on the river.

Bring surface lures that call fish from far away and feather jigs for the pools. In blackwater under strong sun, amber polarized glasses help you see the fish.
