san juan de nicaragua — greytown

Isolated village in the Río San Juan delta on Nicaragua's Caribbean coast, between Indio Maíz Reserve and the sea: tarpon and snook in the channels, lagoons and bar.

San Juan de Nicaragua, the former Greytown (San Juan del Norte), sits in the Río San Juan delta at the far southeast of Nicaragua, on the Río Indio. The village lies between the Río San Juan Wildlife Refuge and the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, with 316,720 ha of forest. Tarpon enter through the bar and move through the delta arms, coastal lagoons and channels; fishing is done from a panga, with heavy artificial lures, jigs and natural bait. White snook and fat snook (calva) are at channel mouths and in the surf, and jacks appear at the bar. Upriver, guapote and machaca bite on small lures. It is expedition-style fishing, with little infrastructure and a lot of rain.
