| item | specification | why |
|---|---|---|
| rod Baitcasting or spinning rod | 5'6" to 6'0", fast action, 12–25 lb (open water) or 17–30 lb (frog in vegetation) | Casting accuracy and the power to pull the trahira out of the weeds. |
| baitcasting reel Low-profile baitcasting reel or 3000 spinning reel | 7:1 or higher gear ratio on the baitcaster; drag of 5 kg or more | Fast retrieve so the frog stays on top. |
| line 8-braid line | PE 3–4 (50–60 lb) | Cuts through vegetation and doesn't stretch on the hookset. |
| leader Mono or fluorocarbon leader | 40–60 lb, 40 to 60 cm; thin steel where piranha are | Trahira's teeth scrape thin line. |
| bait/lure Frogs and sapito | 5–6 cm frog; 8–10 cm silicone sapito | They slide over water hyacinth and grass without snagging. |
| bait/lure Zara and buzzbait | 7–9 cm zara; 7–10 g buzzbait | For open water and the edge of vegetation. |
| hook Spare offset hooks | EWG 3/0–5/0 | Trahira tear the silicone; you'll rig many sapitos. |
| accessory Long-nose pliers and lip grip | 20 cm or longer needle-nose pliers | Never put your finger in a trahira's mouth. |
| safety Boots and gaiters | high-top | Swamps and lagoon shores have snakes. |

tips
- Trahira often strike and let go: set the hook only when you feel the weight.
- Fish slowly near the vegetation late in the afternoon and early at night.
- A spinning reel is easier to start with; the baitcaster comes later, with practice.
