Serrasalmus humeralis
A piranha of the Amazon basin that lives in rivers and estuaries, in fresh and brackish water. When it gets into a net, it attacks the other fish caught in it.
Also called: pirambeta, piranha, pirambeba
A fish of the family Serrasalmidae, the piranhas, with a tall body flattened from side to side. Reaches 20 cm. It lives in the Amazon basin, in Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, in rivers and estuaries, in fresh and brackish water. It eats the fins of other fish. It has strong, sharp teeth, but it is not dangerous to people. When it gets into a net, it attacks the fish caught in it, so it is best to release it quickly. It cannot tolerate water below 11 °C. It has commercial use and is used in the aquarium hobby.
Essential profile. Identification, where it occurs and rules, with data from FishBase and the cited regulations. Season, time of day, technique and bait are added once we have a good source for the pirambeba; in the meantime, see the similar species.
A piranha with a tall body flattened from side to side and strong, sharp teeth, typical of the family Serrasalmidae. It also lives in brackish water, in estuaries, which helps identify it by location. In the Amazon it can be confused with the black piranha and other flat-bodied piranhas; its small size, up to 20 cm, and its habit of eating the fins of other fish help set it apart.

It is not dangerous to anglers, but it has sharp teeth: handle it with care and do not bring your hands near its mouth. If it falls into a net along with other fish, release it promptly, because it attacks the ones that are trapped.
