identification

The jaws have small, pointed teeth mixed with large fang-like teeth, another mark for identification. The back varies from dark gray, blue and brown to green, sometimes with copper-colored spots, and the belly is paler.

what the law says

rules for the lingcod

Summary of the regulations we found, with the source for each. Rules change; before keeping or transporting fish, check with the state environmental agency.

We found no species-specific rule beyond the region's general rules.

catch and release
catch and release Releasing the fish alive, quickly and with a wet hand. During a closed season it isn't always allowed: what the regulation says applies.

The teeth are sharp and the gill rakers cut fingers, so hold it with a cloth or glove. Because it comes from the bottom, the pressure change can cause barotrauma, so release it carefully.

in the kitchen

Sold fresh and frozen; can be boiled, fried, grilled or baked.

calculator
