everything about the porthole shovelnose catfish

overview

who is the porthole shovelnose catfish

Medium-sized leather catfish, common in the Pantanal and the big rivers of the Paraná and Amazon basins. Hunts at night on sand beaches, slack water and cutbanks, eating small fish and shrimp. Often shows up as bycatch when bottom fishing for cachara and pintado. Fights little, but is easy to catch and has very good meat. Pantanal anglers recognize it by its broad, flat head with the lower jaw jutting out. Minimum 40 cm in MS and MT.

fun facts

  • Easy to identify by its chin, which projects forward.
  • In the Pantanal it is common on the same trips as cachara and barbado.
how to recognize it

identification

Very wide, flat head like a duck's bill, with the lower jaw longer than the upper. Light grey to yellowish body, with a few large, round dark spots, widely spaced. Pintado and cachara have a bigger upper jaw, a longer head and a much denser pattern of spots or stripes.
