orós reservoir
One of Ceará's largest reservoirs, on the Jaguaribe River. Peacock bass and pescada in lake fishing in the sertão.
The Orós dams the Jaguaribe River in central-southern Ceará and for decades was the state's largest reservoir, before the Castanhão. It is a sertão lake: stone and caatinga shores, long arms, and a level that rises and falls with wet and dry years. Peacock bass and pescada-do-piauí, introduced in Northeast reservoirs, are the targets of sport fishing; tilapia and trahira complete the catch. Fishing is by boat along the arms and stone points, and from the bank near town.
best season
Second half of the year and early in the year, with the reservoir dropping and fish concentrated. The level depends on the year's rainfall.
Local rules: From Feb 1 to Apr 30, closed season in Ceará's basins, with a ban on nets and other mesh gear and on trade in native species; hand-line and rod anglers are exempt (Portaria Ibama 4/2008). Public reservoir of DNOCS: respect the safety areas of the dam and intake. Check local rules.
