banabuiú açude — banabuiú
Large DNOCS açude in the central sertão of Ceará, on the Banabuiú River. Peacock bass at the rocky points, tilapia and trahira.
The Banabuiú dams the river of the same name, a tributary of the Jaguaribe, and was completed by DNOCS in 1966, with a capacity of about 1.7 billion m³, among the largest in Ceará. Its volume varies greatly with droughts, and in dry years the lake shrinks considerably. Recreational fishing targets peacock bass at points with rock and submerged timber, with mid-water and topwater lures; tilapia, trahira and curimatã are fished with chum and natural bait. The road passes through Quixadá, in the sertão of ridges and monoliths.
best season
After the rains, May to October, with the lake fuller. From Feb 1 to Apr 30, closed season in the Ceará basins, which does not reach the line and rod angler.
Local rules: From Feb 1 to Apr 30, closed season in the Ceará basins, with a ban on nets and other mesh gear and on trade in curimatã, piau, sardinha, branquinha and piaba; the angler with a hand line or rod is outside the ban (Portaria Ibama 4/2008). Public DNOCS açude: respect the dam's safety zones and the water intake. Check local rules.
