guanabara bay head — guapimirim
Mangroves and channels at the head of Guanabara Bay, within the Guapimirim Environmental Protection Area (APA). Robalo-peva and robalo-flecha, with bagre, croaker and ubarana.
The head of Guanabara Bay, between Magé, Guapimirim, Itaboraí and São Gonçalo, holds mangroves protected since 1984 by the Guapimirim APA. The rivers that flow down from the mountains, such as the Guapi-Macacu, form channels and river mouths where sport fishing has a long history: a UFF survey found five fishing clubs in the APA, with a ramp or pier and boat storage, and about 140 boats. In the catches observed, fat snook was the most common fish, followed by common snook and guri sea catfish; croaker, white sea catfish, ubarana and mullet also turned up, along with trahira and jundiá in the freshwater stretches. Fishing is from motorboats, with cane and spinning reels. In the middle of the mangrove is the Guanabara Ecological Station, closed to visitors.
best season
Fishing all year in the mangrove channels and river mouths, with fat snook leading the catches.
Local rules: The Guanabara Ecological Station, inside the APA, is a full-protection unit: entry only for research or education, with ICMBio authorization. White sea catfish (bagre-papai) is an Endangered species: outside São Paulo and Paraná, catching it is banned and the fish must be released (PI SEAP-PR/MMA 39/2018). Minimum sizes in the Southeast (IN MMA 53/2005): common snook 50 cm, fat snook 30 cm, croaker 25 cm, mullet 35 cm. Check local rules.
