itaipu cove — niterói
Niterói's open-ocean cove, between Piratininga and Itacoatiara, with the Pai, Mãe and Menina islands. Croaker, cutlassfish and betara, inside an extractive reserve with its own rules.
Itaipu Cove opens to the sea between Ponta do Imbuí and Ponta de Itaipu, with the beaches of Piratininga, Camboinhas and Itaipu and, offshore, the line of the Pai, Mãe and Menina islands. The bottom is almost all sand, with 3 to 4 meters in the surf and about 30 meters along the islands' line. Itaipu has a traditional small-scale fishing community, with beach seining, nets and line: UFF monitoring showed croaker and cutlassfish as the most important fish, followed by weakfish, betara, xerelete, bluefish and mullet. Since 2013 the sea in front of the beaches has been the Itaipu Marine Extractive Reserve, where amateur fishing is allowed with a catch quota and set distances, and boat fishing trips are run with the reserve's own fishers.
best season
Summer and autumn are the most productive seasons for fishing in the cove. From Mar 15 to Aug 15, fishing is banned at lagoon mouths, such as the Itaipu Lagoon.
Local rules: Itaipu Marine Extractive Reserve (Inea, Inea Resolution 186/2019): amateur fishing allowed, with a quota of 10 kg plus 1 piece per person; amateur fishing boats at least 200 m from the rocky shores and the Pai, Mãe, Menina and Veado islands; no more than 6 amateur anglers per boat; boat fishing tourism only with a guide registered in the reserve; hook fishing banned within 100 m of the Laje de Itaipu; priority for commercial fishing. The emerged parts of the islands and the sea between Itacoatiara and Itaipuaçu are part of the Serra da Tiririca State Park (full protection), where fishing is banned. Mullet: fishing banned at estuary-lagoon mouths from Mar 15 to Aug 15; check whether the Itaipu Lagoon channel falls under the rule. Check local rules.
